Wine BarsAlthough wine bars have been firmly esablished in Rome since ancient times, when senators and freemen had a drink in the "osterias",they have definitely made a comeback in recent years. Every neighbourhood has its share of winebars, each with their own character and speciality. Most also offer food, which ranges from cheese and cured meat platters to snack on, to pasta dishes, local specialities and full on restaurant service. If you want to have a meal it's best to book in advance as many of Rome's wine bars have earned themselves a reputation as a great place to eat, thanks to the convival atmosphere.
A blackboard or list will usually announce the recommendations of the house and any special offers, although you can always ask for your chosen tipple by name, or by pointing to one of the bottles on display. The good news is that if anyof the wines particularly take your fancy, or if youwant to make a really good impression at a dinner party, you'll be able to buy a bottle directly as nearly all of the winebars also sell by the bottle to take away.
The price per glass will obviously vary, from about €2 in the less trendy establishments to really silly amounts for top end wines. Don't get caught out, make sure you know exactly what you're ordering! |
